Maurice Andrews: Butcher’s stalwart service

MAURICE Andrews, one of Didcot’s best-known butchers, has died aged 90.
Mr Andrews, who was born in the town on February 22, 1921, was the son of Hubert and Rose Andrews, of H Andrews & Son Master Butchers. One of seven children, Maurice Andrews survived all his siblings, five brothers and one sister.
A Royal Marine during the Second World War, he served in the Middle East, rising to the rank of Sergeant.
Mr Andrews, right, who lived in Didcot, was married for 65 years to Mel, née Whitfield.
The couple were delighted to receive a card from the Queen on their anniversary last year.
Mr Andrews attended Northbourne School and St Frideswide’s School in Didcot.
He was a Didcot town councillor from 1966 to 1979 and one of the first members of Didcot Conservative Club, becoming vice president and life member.
Mr Andrews, who passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, is survived by Mel, their son Peter and daughter Ray, seven grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
A family-only funeral will be followed by a celebration of his life, at All Saints Church, Didcot, at 2.45pm next Thursday.
