FOOTBALL: Seaward opts for Abingdon
9:50am Friday 3rd February 2012
Abingdon United boss Richie Bourne expects Danny Seaward to make his debut in their Evo-Stik Southern League Division 1 South & West game match at home to Gosport Borough.
The striker, released by Didcot town last month, was set to sign for the Abbots last night.
Bourne said: “We hoped Danny would be with us last week, but after weighting up other options – he had an offer from Staines – he has decided to join us.
“I’m delighted, because although he didn’t score many times for Didcot, he’s a busy creative player.”
Abingdon will be without skipper Ricky Allaway, who is attending his brother’s wedding.
Gosport, who have struggled away of late, could have BBC football pundit Steve Claridge, if his broadcasting commitments permit.
North Leigh, who are chasing a play-off place, have strengthened their squad by taking on young Oxford United defender Henry Owen, and Damian Crudup, a left back released by Reading.
The pair are both in the squad for tomorrow’s trip to Cinderford.
“There are about nine teams in the hunt for the play-offs – and Cinderford are one of them,” said North Leigh boss Mark Gee.
“After missing out by one place last season, I’ve decided to strengthen the squad this time.”
Gee was delighted with his side’s Oxon Senior Cup success over Oxford United in midweek, even though the npower League Two side only fielded a youth team.
“We were preparing to face stronger opposition, but still got the business done, which was pleasing,” said the Millers’ boss.
Didcot Town, who were unlucky to lose to high-riding Hungerford Town last week, are at home to Halesowen.
